An elusive and ominous piece, this abstract painting is a study for one of Gabino's most well known series of sculptures, created in the 1970's and 80's, which includes pieces such as 'Escudo de Venus XV (1974)' and 'Escudo Lunar XXI (1984)'. An 'Escudo' (Spanish for 'Shield') is depicted by the artist using a variety of different metals in his sculptures, which have sold for thousands of euros at auctions such as Christie's. Here, the artist depicts this 'shield' in its two-dimensional form - a striking contrast between black and white creating a dramatic focal point for the composition, and drawing us in to this hypnotic image.

Amadeo Gabino, born in Valencia in 1922, was a highly esteemed Spanish sculptor, painter and printmaker. After beginning his artistic career at the San Carlos Superior School of Fine Arts in Valencia, the artist gained a scholarship to study in New York, where he worked alongside some of the most influential artists of the era. He went on to win a variety of prestigious awards for his work. Gabino is most celebrated for his outstanding sculptures, which range from figurative to constructivist in style.
