Still life with Oil Lamp by Julio Borrell
This beautiful still life composition uses a rich palette of copper, brown and gold. The depiction of light falling on each item gives an exquisite finish.
Julio Borrell i Pla was a well known Spanish artist, who used a naturalistic academic style. He was particularly noted for his traditional Spanish scenes, featuring depictions of local women ('majas') in their elaborate outfits of the period. He was taught his art by his father Pere Borrell del Caso and created prominent murals for the Palau de la Generalitat in Barcelona.
A painting by the artist himself, 'Entierro de Mossen Cinto Verdaguar', sold for €13,000 at auction in 2006.
