A lovely gem of a still life composition, painted in deep tonal colours in an earthy, naturalist style. Using food has allow the artist to play with a range of colours and textures, and there is a deep delight in how light flickers on the surface of each object.
The dark outlines are highly reminiscent of 19th century still lifes of Manet and also Cezanne, who famously used onions in a painting now in the Musee d'Orsay.
