Signed in pencil by the great Master of Surrealism himself, Salvador Dalí, this magnificent print has a fascinating story to tell. In the 1950's, at the pinnacle of his fame, Dalí was commissioned by the Italian government to illustrate Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy to be released as a series of limited edition prints in 1965 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the poet's birth.

Dalí spent eight years working on a collection of paintings based upon the epic poem. However, when the word spread that a Spaniard had been granted the task of honouring one of the most esteemed cultural legacies of Italy, the public uproar led this dispute to be debated in parliament, resulting in the cancellation of Dalí's contract. However, the great artist carried on this endeavour himself, completing the extraordinary depictions of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory inspired by Dante's work.

This set of 100 watercolours were reproduced under the supervision of the artist as wood engravings onto 3,500 blocks - considered to be Dalí's most remarkable graphic achievement. A spellbinding merging between a world renowned artist and one of the great literary masters of all time.
