Description
Framed signed and inscribed water colour by Hamed Abdalla (Egypt, 1917-1985) of a Arab gentleman.

Hamed Abdalla developed a distinctive modern style rooted in Egyptian culture and social experience. Although he spent many years in Europe and absorbed aspects of European modernism, he remained committed to expressing his own cultural identity. His later work became increasingly abstract, often incorporating Arabic letterforms and reflecting his political convictions and spiritual interests.

This early watercolour, dated 1944, depicts a seated man in traditional dress. Its simplified forms, strong outlines and restrained palette already reveal Abdalla’s developing interest in combining everyday Egyptian subjects with a modern visual language.
