Village Church – Signed Casals Grau Pen and Ink Drawing

Description
A detailed pen and ink drawing depicting a village church rising above a cluster of stone houses. Fine sepia lines describe the masonry, tiled roofs, timber balconies and winding stairways, with subtle grey-blue shading adding depth to the foreground.
The vertical composition leads the eye through the closely grouped buildings towards the church’s arched windows and tiered bell gable. Carefully observed architectural details and restrained colour give the scene a quiet, measured character.
Signed “Casals Grau” at the lower right and presented in a dark wooden frame with a gilt inner border and charcoal-coloured mount.
Artist Details
The signature and accompanying exhibition material support an attribution to Vicenç Casals i Grau, a Catalan painter associated with Granollers.
A leaflet attached to the reverse advertises an “Exposició Antològica” — retrospective exhibition — of V. Casals Grau at the Reial Cercle Artístic, Barcelona, ending on 15 November 1987. Its presence does not establish that this particular drawing was exhibited there.

Best described as traditional representational drawing, with an emphasis on architectural observation and fine linear detail. No specific artistic influence is documented.
Condition
The photographs show paper discolouration, particularly around the perimeter, with some scattered marks and a blue-grey area in the lower foreground. Whether all of this colour is intentional cannot be established from the images. The work has not been examined outside its frame.
Frame Condition
Dark wooden frame with a gilt inner border and charcoal-coloured mount. Visible surface scratches, scuffs and small losses to the finish. The reverse retains an exhibition leaflet and a Barcelona framer’s label.
