Discription An energetic vintage oil sketch depicting a group of sailing boats gathered in a harbour, painted with wonderfully loose and expressive brushwork.
The artist has worked quickly and confidently, using broad sweeps of blue, turquoise, muted green and earthy neutral tones to suggest the boats, water and surrounding landscape. Areas of exposed ground are deliberately incorporated into the composition, giving the painting the spontaneous quality of a plein-air study.
The vertical masts provide a strong structure against the loosely painted mountainous or coastal backdrop, while the central white-hulled boat forms the focus of the composition. Particularly appealing are the vigorous passages of thickly applied paint and the economical way in which the boats have been described with only a few strokes.
