Description
An exceptional pair of monumental bronze and brass eight-light chandeliers, combining Neo-Gothic architecture with the flowing organic forms associated with the Catalan Modernisme movement. Strongly Gaudí-influenced in their sculptural execution, the chandeliers feature mythical dragon-form branches, griffin supports, stylised beasts and richly scrolling ornament that recalls the imaginative decorative language seen in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Barcelona.
Each chandelier is fitted with its original pierced bronze hanging shades, beautifully cast with playful cherubs in high relief against coloured fabric backings. These decorative shades may be displayed as originally intended or removed entirely, allowing the chandeliers to present either an elaborate sculptural appearance or a more open architectural form.
Retaining their original aged bronze patina, the pair possesses outstanding decorative presence and displays the exceptional quality of European art bronze casting from the period.
Artistic Influence
Although not attributed to Antoni Gaudí, these chandeliers exhibit many characteristics associated with the Catalan Modernisme movement. The organic dragon forms, flowing asymmetrical curves, sculptural treatment of natural and mythical creatures, and integration of Gothic architectural elements are all strongly reminiscent of designs popularised by Gaudí and his contemporaries in Barcelona during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their theatrical combination of Gothic Revival ornament and Art Nouveau-inspired naturalism makes them particularly distinctive decorative lighting pieces.
Design & Craftsmanship
Expertly cast in bronze and brass, the chandeliers display remarkable sculptural modelling throughout. Dragon-form arms radiate from the central body, while finely detailed griffins support the upper section beneath an elegant spiral column terminating in decorative Gothic tracery. The original pierced bronze shade panels, each depicting cherubs amongst scrolling foliage, add further depth and visual richness, creating an impressive interplay of light and shadow when illuminated.
Condition
Presented in original condition with an attractive aged patina consistent with age.
One original red fabric backing is missing from one hanging shade.
Two small hanging branches supporting one of the shades require minor repair by welding or a suitable metal adhesive due to small breaks.
One minor decorative lower scroll ornament is missing and could be professionally recast using the matching ornament from the companion chandelier as a pattern.
These are sympathetic restoration issues that do not detract from the overall decorative impact of this exceptional pair.
