Almond Blossoms. Oil on Board by Salvador Baliellas Oliva
Almond Blossoms. Oil on Board by Salvador Baliellas Oliva
Almond blossom, flowering in the early spring, is an iconic symbol of new life, as well as being a favoured subject of Vincent Van Gogh. In this bright, idyllic landscape, Baliellas delicately paints the scenery in an almost ethereal palette of pastel hues, as if the dazzling pink and white of the blossom has projected itself across the scene.
Salvador Baliellas Oliva was born in Vic, Catalonia in 1932. After studying at the Municipal School of Drawing in his native town, in 1959 he participated in his first collective exhibition at the Association of Artists of Vic. Baliellas went on to win prizes at many different painting competitions, with his major solo exhibition taking place in 1977 in Lleida. He is best known for his incredible skill as a landscape painter.
