An extraordinary image in the style of the Cobra artists. The bold colours and twisted forms create an animalistic energy to this large painting, highly reminiscent of the early work of Karel Appel. This piece also has strong echoes of 'La Danse' (1909-1910), the famous masterpiece by Henri Matisse.

Jean Pons was a French artist who was related to the Post-War School of Paris artists. He founded an lithography workshop in 1938 that was used by many important figures such as Andre Lanskoy, Serge Poliakoff and Nicolas de Staël.

Influenced by these artists, Pons created a unique, highly abstracted and geometric visual style. In the words of the artist himself, "Abstraction came to me because of my attraction to risk-taking."
