Born in Edinburgh, Pettie studied at the Trustees' Academy under Robert Scott Lauder alongside artists including William Quiller Orchardson and William McTaggart. He moved to London in 1862, established a successful career and was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1866 and Royal Academician in 1874. The National Galleries of Scotland notes the importance of David Wilkie's influence on his work.
