Bronzed bust with marble base of Dante by Giuseppe Moretti
Bronzed bust with marble base of Dante by Giuseppe Moretti
Giuseppe Moretti (1857-1935) was a notable award-winning Italian sculptor who became known in the United States for his fantastic bronze and marble public monuments. This expertly crafted bronze bust is a superb depiction of Dante, the influential 13th century writer of Divine Comedy.
The drapery of the clothing and detail in the ornamentation of this figure show an excellent level of craftsmanship, and perhaps even more outstanding is the highly lifelike stern expression of the poet’s face. This powerful sculpture would make an impressive addition to the collection of a lover of literature and history.
