Description
A large woven bag attributed to the Shahsavan of the Moghan region, identified as a mafrash and dated to the early 20th century. Worked in the sumak style, with wool decoration on a wool foundation, the textile features horizontal bands of geometric ornament surrounding a prominent central diamond medallion.
Muted terracotta, orange, mustard yellow, lilac, cream and grey-green contrast with the dark brown ground. Stepped diamonds, hooked forms and small repeating motifs create a densely patterned surface, framed by narrow striped bands. The predominantly plain brown reverse retains visible patches and stitched repairs.
The woven texture, variations in colour and evidence of use contribute to its individual character. Presented as a decorative textile or wall hanging, this attributed Shahsavan mafrash offers intricate geometric pattern and a subdued palette suited to both traditional and contemporary settings.
