Titled 'Rooted to the Soil' by the artist, this exceptional piece depicts a wooded area, in the foreground of which we can see the sinuous roots of a large tree exposed in the ground. These sprawling roots and bare winter branches are beautifully captured in tones of sepia by Morphew, who evokes a sense of memory and nostalgia in this work. On the reverse, the artist writes about his colour scheme and specific shades of paint used to create this piece.
Reginald Morphew was an architect and painter born in Wandsworth, London in 1874, Known for his highly accomplished watercolour landscapes.
