This wonderful piece depicts the Egyptian goddess Isis nursing her child Horus. Horus was the god of kingship and the sky and was the son of Isis and Osiris.
The design of this piece is based on traditional Ancient Egyptian depiction of the pair, where Isis is always depicting seated on a throne wearing a horned crown.
The piece is a symbol of motherhood and protection. A major example in the Met. Museum Collection in New York can be viewed here.
